Charles M. Cabaniss

October 2, 1943 — February 4, 2026

Charles M. Cabaniss, 82, passed away peacefully on February 4th, 2026, at his home in McVay, Alabama, after a long battle with Parkinson's disease.

Charles was born on October 2nd, 1943, in McVay, Alabama, to parents Carlos and Edna Cabaniss. In 1962, he graduated from Jackson High School, where he was a star middle linebacker despite weighing a mere 120 pounds. He married Judy, his beloved wife of 50 years, on January 22, 1965.

After high school, Charles worked a brief stint with Clarke-Washington EMC before being hired by the Alabama Power Company in 1965, where he worked for 45 years, retiring in 2010. There, he began his career as a lineman and was eventually promoted to Line Crew Foreman, mentoring dozens of young linemen. He was deeply respected by his coworkers and crew, who knew him as "Chah-lie," for his integrity, work ethic, and dedication to the Power Company.

Charles was an outdoorsman. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and riding around his property with his dog Biscuit. In retirement, he could often be found doing consulting work for East Bay Electric or watching Gunsmoke from his living room recliner. A true handyman, Charles could fix almost anything, from cars to tractors to fallen power lines.

Charles was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, loved for his tough but gentle way.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Carlos and Edna Cabaniss; his sister, Margaret Cranford; his nephew, Scott Morgan; and his wife, Judy.

Charles is survived by his three children, Darryl Cabaniss, Lance (Jill) Cabaniss, and Candyce (Larry) Morgese; his five grandchildren, Storm, Cody, Chase, Sydney, and Sophie; his sister, Mary Sue (Tude) Morgan; and his three great-grandchildren.

His life can be summed up by his favorite phrase, "I do it my way," which he displayed on his license plate for all of Jackson to see as he made his daily trips to the post office.

Rest in peace, Charles. We love you.
