Freddie Louis McLain

February 18, 1942 — February 25, 2026

Freddie Louis McLain, 84, of Wagarville, passed away on February 25, 2026, at Washington County Hospital. Born on February 18, 1942, to parents, Grady Cecil, Sr. and Evelyn (Chafin) McLain. Freddie lived a full and meaningful life defined by love, hard work, adventure, and service to others.

Freddie proudly served his country as a veteran of the United States Air Force, carrying the values of dedication and integrity with him throughout his life. Following his military service, he built a long and steady career at Boise Paper Mill, where he was known for his strong work ethic and the friendships he formed over the years.

A lifelong traveler at heart, Freddie found joy in the open road. He and his beloved wife, Janie, often set out in their motor home to explore the beauty of the world around them. Together they traveled to Canada, Alaska, throughout the United States, and across several countries in Europe. Whether parked beside a quiet lake or cruising along scenic highways, Freddie cherished the freedom and adventure that travel brought into his life.

At home, Freddie was happiest with a woodworking project underway or a fishing line cast into calm waters. He had a gift for working with his hands, crafting pieces that will remain treasured keepsakes for his family. Fishing brought him peace and reflection, and many of his favorite stories began with early mornings by the water. He was also an amateur radio operator, a hobby that allowed him to connect with people across the country and around the world. Through his ham radio, he enjoyed the fellowship of fellow operators and the simple wonder of voices traveling across the airwaves.

Freddie was also a devoted member of the Masonic fraternity, living by its principles of brotherhood, charity, and truth. His faithfulness to family, friends, and community reflected the quiet strength and character he carried throughout his life.

Above all, Freddie's greatest love was his family. He shared 64 beautiful years of marriage with his wife, Janie, a partnership built on devotion, laughter, resilience, and unwavering support. Their life together was a testament to enduring love and commitment.

Freddie will be remembered for his steady presence, adventurous spirit, skilled hands, and kind heart. His legacy lives on in the memories shared by those who traveled beside him, learned from him, laughed with him, and loved him.

Freddie is preceded in death by his parents Grady Cecil, Sr, and Evelyn McLain; brother, Grady Cecil McLain, Jr; sister, Nora Ellen Gideon; and sister-in-law Barbara Harwood.

Freddie is survived by his loving wife, Janie McLain; sons, Freddie Louis (Amanda) McLain, Jr and Stephen Wade (Cheryl) McLain; grandchildren, Haleigh Elizabeth Caster, Louis Alexander McLain, Patrick William McLain, Katelynn Sarah McLain, and Cody Nathaniel McLain; and great-granddaughter, Evelyn "Evie" Violet Caster.
