Gary Thompson

September 7, 1970 — December 24, 2025

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gary Cowan Thompson Sr., a cherished father, son, and friend, who left us peacefully on December 24, 2025, at the age of 55. Born in Jackson on September 7, 1970, Gary was a beloved member of the community who touched the lives of many with his warmth and passion for life.

Throughout his life, Gary built a legacy of love for the outdoors, embracing his passions for hunting, fishing, and the Alabama football spirit. He and his late wife, Kim, spent countless joyful hours together at the Cowan Camp in Butler, creating memories that will last a lifetime. Their adventures, often shared with close friends Tim and Candy Wilson, often revolved around good food and laughter near the water, whether it was by pools, ponds, or rivers.

After Kim's passing, Gary found solace in his grandchildren, whom he adored with all his heart. His love for the camp remained unwavering, and he could often be found working on projects outside or sharing exciting tales of adventures spent with his sons and cousins, chasing deer, turkeys, and hogs or patiently waiting for catfish on the riverbank. In recent years, he enjoyed taking his camper to the beach, exploring new restaurants in Baldwin County, and creating new memories.

Gary's journey with cancer was a tough one, but he faced it with the same courage and tenacity that he approached life. Throughout his battle, he was surrounded by the unwavering support of his sisters, who shared not only his struggles but countless stories from their childhood. Their journeys to appointments in Mobile and at UAB were spent sharing stories and Gary give them driving tips and critiques. His laughter and spirit brought comfort to many during this time.

He also cherished the time spent with his nephew Aaron and brother-in-law Bobby. In his younger years he could often be found with them and his sons gigging flounder or deep-sea fishing, enjoying the simple joys of life on the water. As a master machinist at the Packing Corporation of America, Gary devoted many years to his craft and made lifelong friendships along the way.

Gary is survived by his sons, Gary Thompson Jr. and Wesley Thompson (Molly); grandchildren, Brayden, Bexley, and Adleigh Anne; parents, Ted and Nora Thompson; sisters, Jan Thompson and Sandi Breitling (Hal); numerous nephews, a niece, and a host of treasured cousins and close friends.

He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Kimberly Tillman Thompson and grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Walter Aaron Lolley and Mr. & Mrs. Glenn "Bo" Thompson.

Gary's memory will be honored at a memorial service that will take place on December 30, 2025, at Lathan Funeral Home in Jackson, beginning at 3:00 PM. Prior to the service, there will be a public visitation from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM, allowing all who knew Gary to come together and celebrate his incredible life.

Honorary pallbearers will be Gary Thompson Jr, Wesley Thompson, Bobby Tillman, Aaron Tillman, Pip Allen, Dan Allen, and Steve Anderson.

In this time of reflection and remembrance, we invite those who loved Gary to join us in sharing stories and memories of a remarkable man who filled our lives with joy and laughter. He will be dearly missed but forever remembered in our hearts.
