Horace Smith

March 16, 1930 — January 26, 2026

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Horace B. Smith, a cherished member of the Fruitdale community, who departed this life peacefully on January 26, 2026, at the age of 95. Born on March 16, 1930, Horace lived a life rich in love, service, and dedication.

A proud veteran of the United States Army, Horace answered the call to serve his country with honor and commitment. After his military service, he dedicated many years to working for the Mobile Water Service Systems, where he was known for his strong work ethic and reliability.

Horace was married to his beloved wife, Ellen Jeanette Smith, for an incredible 56 years. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories until her passing. Their bond served as a testament to the power of partnership, and he often spoke fondly of the life they shared. He pronounced his love for Christ recently with his daughter, Mary, and attended Chatom Baptist Church often.

In his leisure time, Horace found joy in the simple pleasures of life - fishing, hunting, and tending to his beloved vegetable garden. His love for nature and the outdoors brought him peace and satisfaction, and he was always eager to share his harvest with neighbors and friends.

Horace is preceded in death by his parents , Alford Leroy Smith and Hettie Idella Hare Smith, his wife, Ellen Smith; son, Larry Bennie Smith (Fran); daughter, Maylee Smith; brothers, George, Frank, and Clinton Smith; sisters, Louis Beech and Dorothy Cummings.

Horace is survived by his loving daughters, Lanette (Dave) Gow, Marie (Randall) Sims, Mary (James) Taylor, Grandchildren; Vickie (Charles) Dickgieser, Michael Brantley, Laura Brantley, Sydney (Jon Michael) Davidson, Mason Taylor, Michael Smith, Jamie Taylor; Great Grandchildren Damian Dickgieser, Shaylah Dickgieser, and LaToya "Niki" Brantley; brothers Jerry Smith, and Raymond (Judy) Smith, who carries forward his legacy of kindness and resilience.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Michael Brantley, Mason Taylor, Jon Michael Davidson, Michael Smith, Charles Dickgieser, Damian Dickgieser, Dave Truax, Randall Sims, and James Taylor.

A public visitation will be held at Chatom Baptist Church on February 2, 2026, at 10:00 AM. This will be followed by a Funeral Service at the church starting at 11:00 AM, where family and friends will gather to celebrate Horace's remarkable life. A graveside service will take place at the Yellow Pine Community Cemetery following the services.

Horace Smith will be deeply missed but forever remembered for his warmth, generosity, and unwavering love for his family and community. May he rest in peace.
