Janis Faye McLendon McCallister, 78, a lifelong resident of Jackson, Al, went to be with her Lord and Savior December 6, 2025.
She was born at South Alabama Infirmary in Jackson, October 26, 1947 to her beloved parents, Foscue and Helen McLendon. She spent her childhood with her sisters on her family's cattle farm which sparked her enduring love of animals.
Faye met her husband of 55 years, Bob McCallister in 1968 while shoe shopping at Hardy Shoes where he was a salesman. She left with not only shoes but also a date. They were married in a double wedding, along with her sister, on June 13, 1970, and soon after made their home in the McVay Community in Jackson.
She began her career in the insurance business at Skipper Insurance and then at Liberty National where she remained for more than 20 years. Meticulous in nature, insurance work was well suited to her, and she enjoyed meeting customers. She also worked at Grove Hill Memorial Hospital and Consumer Credit Counseling, before retiring from the Clarke County Museum where she worked alongside her daughter.
She remained thoughtful, studious, and inquisitive throughout her life, engaging in a lifelong love of reading and knowledge. A devoted daughter, she, alongside her sisters, committed a decade of unwavering care for their parents, giving them selfless love, comfort, and dignity through several long illnesses.
In her later years, her greatest joy was her grandson, Ryder, who brought nine wonderful years of happiness into her life. She delighted in the many trips vacations she and Bob shared with their daughter, son-in-law, and grandson. She also cherished the special excursions she shared with her three sisters, giving her moments of companionship, joy, and lasting memories.
Faye lived her life with a humble spirit, a quiet determination, and a loving soul. She never sought recognition, yet her quiet works had a profound and enduring impact. Her sharp attention to detail made her exceptional at helping others uncover discrepancies in their bills -- she could spot the missing penny and never overlooked a single line of fine print. Her hallmarks were her compassion for others and a remarkable patience that guided how she treated those around her.
She is survived by her loving husband, Bobby McCallister, her devoted daughter, Kerry McCallister Dunaway, her faithful son-in-law, Paul Dunaway, two cherished sisters, Betty Overstreet and Sandra (Ronnie) Pruitt, both of Grove Hill, and her most beloved grandson, Ryder Dunaway of Jackson.
Faye was predeceased by her father, Arvin Foscue McLendon, her mother, Helen Dale McLean McLendon, and her baby sister, Paula Ann McLendon Harris.
Active pallbearers are Matthew Padgett, Russell Lawlis, Glen Padgett, Michael Garrett, Duane Dunaway and Gerry McLendon.
Visitation will be Wednesday, December 10th at 10 am, and the service at 11 am in the Chapel at Lathan Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Gardens.
