John Garris

John Franklin Garris, 63, a native of Leroy, Alabama and longtime softball coach passed away Friday, August 1, 2025, in Michigan. He was born on May 21, 1962, in Jackson, Alabama to parents John Marshall and Alline Bounds Garris.

John was a graduate of Leroy High School and the University of Alabama. He was a member of the Million Dollar band where he led the percussion line and was fondly known as "Downtown". He received his undergraduate as well as two master's degrees from the University of Alabama. He also earned an Educational Specialist degree from Delta State University.

John was a loving son, brother, uncle, and great uncle to his large and widespread family. He remembered birthdays and special occasions, he showed up for important events, he called or texted to check in regularly - he just made time for those he loved.

John coached softball for over 30 years at both high school and collegiate levels. "Coach G" as he was known to many of his players, made a lasting impact on their lives, not only helping them to become better players, but also teaching them important life lessons. He was well known for his infectious grin, positive attitude and captivating storytelling. John coached at a number of schools during his career, including Delta State University, where he was named "Coach of the Year" for Gulf South Conference and won three Gulf South Conference West Division Championships, Rutgers, Southern University where he was named "SWAC Coach of the Year", Samford University, University of Maryland, and most recently Bay College of Michigan. During his career John coached a number of record setting athletes including several named to All Conference teams. John was also very active in coaching and instructing at softball camps throughout the U.S. and took several teams on International Tours.

John was preceded in death by his father and mother, John Marshall Garris and Alline Bounds Garris, sisters Martha Garris Crim (Walter), Marsha Garris Lindblom (Hunter), and brother William H "Bill" Garris (Kay).

John is survived by his brothers Danny (Gwen) Powell, Andy (Amelia) Powell, David (Cindy) Powell, nieces and nephews, Dana Powell (Corey) Moseley, Dru (Jenilee) Powell, Matt (Kari) Powell, Christy Powell, Ryan (M) Powell, Casey (Mandi) Powell, Cal (Allie) Powell, Tim (Susan) Lindblom, Sam (Paige) Lindblom, Emily Lindblom (Jeff) King, Marshall (Shari) Crim, Ellen Crim (Rob) Adamson, Will (Jennifer) Crim, Jennifer Garris, Brad (Lori) Garris, as well as many great nieces and great nephews.

Pallbearers will be all his nephews.

Funeral Services will be at 11:30 am on Saturday, August 9, 2025, at Lathan Funeral Home in Jackson with a visitation starting at 10:30 am. Bro. Ben Posey will be officiating, graveside service will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery in Leroy, Alabama.
