Lemuel Melvin Knapp

December 20, 1947 — May 31, 2026

Lemuel Melvin Knapp, affectionately known as "L.M.," passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 31, 2026, at the age of 78. A lifelong family man and proud veteran, L.M. leaves behind a legacy of service, dedication, and love.

Born on Saturday, December 20, 1947, to Melvin W. Knapp and Cora Mae (Carlton) Bailey, L.M. spent his later years in Tibbie, Alabama, where he returned after a successful career and enjoyed the comfort of home and family.

L.M. proudly served his country in the United States Navy. During his military service, he was stationed aboard the USS Yorktown, famously known as "The Fighting Lady," and honorably completed two tours of duty during the Vietnam War. His service reflected the courage, commitment, and patriotism that remained hallmarks of his character throughout his life.

Following his military service, L.M. built a distinguished career with Southern California Gas Company, where he worked his way into a supervisory role. He was respected by his colleagues for his strong work ethic, leadership, and dedication. Upon retirement, he returned to his roots in Alabama, where he enjoyed a quieter life surrounded by family and friends.

L.M. was an avid sports fan who could always be counted on to follow his favorite teams and enjoy spirited conversations about the latest games and seasons. More than anything, however, he cherished his family. Whether gathering for holidays, celebrating milestones, or simply spending time together, he found his greatest joy in the people he loved.

He will be remembered for his steadfast devotion to his family, his pride in serving his country, his willingness to lend a helping hand, and the countless memories he created with those fortunate enough to know him.

L.M. is preceded in death by his parents, Melvin W. Knapp and Cora Mae (Carlton) Bailey; siblings, Howard Knapp, Hilton Knapp, Doris Knapp, Patricia Ann Knapp, Dwight Knapp, David Lamar "Duke" Knapp, Henry Ray Bailey and Dorothy Bailey Brannan.
