Obituary

It is with a mix of sadness and celebration that we announce the passing of Marlin 'Red' Edward Parnell, who left us on July 22, 2026, at the age of 92. Born on July 1, 1934, Marlin grew up in Mobile, attended school, and worked at Brookley Field until it closed down. He moved back home to Tibbie and raised his family, Red retired from Ciba Geigy, He married Barbara Lane and after her passing in 2007, he rekindled a friendship and later 18 years of marriage to Maxine McIlwain. Red lived a full life in Tibbie, he went fishing whenever he could, loved to visit with his friends, taught Sunday School and was a faithful member of Chaton Church of God.

Preceded in death by his first wife Barbara Parnell, his parents Leslie and Ima Howard Parnell, and siblings Donald Parnell, Arlin Parnell, and Dorothy Urban.

Marlin is survived by his loving spouse, Maxine Parnell, who stood by his side through thick and thin. Children Lane Parnell, Wade Parnell, Lisa Barnes, Toni Busby, Maxine's children Jonathan Moss, and Monica Taylor. Four grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and loving friends. With a twinkle in his eye and a smile that could light up a room, he left an indelible mark on all who knew him.

Pallbearers will be Don Welborn, Nick Ross, Chris Morris, Jonathan Moss, Chuck Taylor, Gerald Reynolds. Honorary pallbearers will be William Hill Ray Williams, Curtis Green, Grover Buchanan, Hollis Parnell, Ben Atchison, Chip Bell, Chip Maddox, Ronnie Eubanks, Earl Hudson, Gerald Mott, and Robert Howard.

A public viewing will take place at Lathan Funeral Home in Chatom on Friday, July 24, 2026, 6-8 PM, and again on Saturday, July 25, 2026, from 10-11 AM. Funeral service will begin at 11 AM at Lathan Funeral Home. Following the service, a graveside ceremony will be held at Chatom Church of God Cemetery Officiating Red's services will be Naomi Brown, Bob Younge, and Mikey Loper.

In true Marlin fashion, let us come together to share stories, laughter, and memories that will keep his spirit alive in our hearts. He may be gone, but his impact on our lives will echo for years to come. We look forward to seeing everyone there to celebrate a life well-lived!
