Rufus L. Dickey Jr., passed away at his son's home in Tallahassee, Florida on February 17, 2024, with his family by his side. He was born on February 12, 1940, to parents Rufus L. and Alberta Loper Dickey, Sr.
Mr. Dickey grew up in Chatom, Alabama, attending Washington County High School. He studied music at the University of West Alabama at Livingston, where he met his sweetheart and wife, Faye Prestwood Dickey. Upon graduation with his bachelor's degree, he and Faye moved to Rochester, NY where he studied music and earned his master's degree at Eastman School of Music. He and his family later moved to Tallahassee, Florida where he pursued a doctorate degree in music at Florida State University while simultaneously engaging in the profession of land surveying.
Mr. Dickey's vocational and professional career included high school music teacher, trombone player in the Mobile Symphony Orchestra, and over 30 years as a professional land surveyor registered in the State of Florida.
Mr. Dickey enjoyed the outdoors and frequently spent his leisure time hunting and fishing, sharing this passion with his family. He was an avid gardener, growing both flowers and vegetables and propagating many of his own plant selections. He loved his family more than life itself and was the most kind and loving family husband and father.
Preceded in death by his wife, Faye Prestwood Dickey; his parents, Rufus Dickey Sr., and Alberta Loper Dickey; his brother Perry Dickey; and sister Charlotte Dickey Williams.
Mr. Dickey is survived by his son Rufus L. (and wife Anna) Dickey, III, grandchildren Brennan and Fionna Dickey, and brother Bobby Dickey, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and loving friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Chatom Baptist Church in Mr. Rufus Dickey's name.
Graveside Services will be on Saturday, February 24, 2024, at 11 a.m. at the Chatom Town Cemetery with Bro. Bill Dortch officiating and Lathan Funeral Home directing. Online condolences may be shared at www.lathanfuneralhome.com
