Virgil "V. O." Krout

March 10, 1942 — June 9, 2021

Virgil Oliver Krout, of Jackson, Alabama, passed away on Wednesday, June 9, 2021, at age 79. He died peacefully at home in Irvington, Alabama, with his beloved wife, Sherry, by his side.

V.O. was born on March 10, 1942, in Pondville, Alabama, to J.C. and Dorothy Krout. As a boy, he spent his first twelve years in York, Alabama, a small town outside of Tuscaloosa. This explains his love of Alabama football. A big Roll Tide for you, V.O.

In 1954, his family moved to Jackson, Alabama, where he lived for forty years. He graduated from Jackson High School in 1960 and began working in the timber industry before becoming the owner of a convenience store in Wagarville, Alabama. For the last thirty years, V.O. has lived in Irvington, Alabama, and retired from English Colors in 2017.

“Ox” as some of his family and friends knew him, was just that: a strong-willed and dedicated man who worked hard for his family the entirety of his life. Others, namely his brother, called him “Bo.” No matter what you called him, you knew him as the man who had a passion for golf, football, and baseball. He spent countless hours watching his grandchildren play sports and loved every moment of it.

He was the patriarch of his family and a friend to all: a man who would give his shirt to a stranger. He was a dedicated father who took care of his children and did the best he could to teach them and guide them; a loving grandfather to nine and a great-grandfather to nine.

V.O. was a strong, proud, and good man. He is loved and will be missed dearly by many.

He is preceded in death by his parents, J.C. and Dorothy Krout; his brother, Charles P. Krout; his sister, Barbara Krout Boyd; and his son, James (Jim) Black.

Mr. Krout is survived by his loving wife, Sherry Jones Krout; children, Alan Krout (Kendra), Kim Hayes (Jason), Karla Howard (Bruce), Rhonda Haynes (Jason); his grandchildren, Tyler Hayes, Karly Wickell (Kyle), Meagan Hoven (Kipp), Dalton McCulley (Courtney), Madelyn Hateley (Dawson), Steven Krout, Erica Krout, Kinsey Blake Haynes, Brittany Black; his nine great grandchildren; and beloved friends and relatives.

A memorial service will be held on June 22, 2021, at 10 a.m. at Lathan’s Funeral Home in Jackson, Alabama. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
