It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Virginia Woodyard Gill Burge, beloved wife, mother, and lovingly known to many as "MawMaw", who left this world peacefully on November 15, 2025, at the age of 92. Virginia was a cherished member of her community in McIntosh, where she lived a full and vibrant life.
Born on October 16, 1933, Virginia was a steadfast and loving companion to her husband, John H. Burge. Their shared passion for travel took them on many adventures, often alongside their dear friends, Terry and Kenny Coleman. Virginia's love for life extended beyond exploration; she found joy in gardening, birdwatching, cooking for others and cultivating both beautiful flowers and a deep appreciation for nature's wonders.
As a member of the McIntosh United Methodist Church and the UMW Club, Virginia contributed her warmth and spirit to her community, inspiring others with her kindness. She also cherished the fellowship of her friends from the "Creekbank Bunch," where laughter and good food were always on the menu at Creekbank Restaurant.
Virginia is preceded in death by her parents, Willodean and Taylor Woodyard; first husband, Clifton R. Gill; and brother, Neil M. Woodyard, Sr.
She is survived by her husband, John H. Burge of McIntosh; son, Walter Taylor (Jenny) Gill of McIntosh; daughter, Nancy Gill (Dan) McConaghy of Spanish Fort; brother, George William (Barbara) Woodyard, Sr of Leroy; her treasured 6 grandchildren and their spouses, 15 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held for Virginia at Lathan Funeral Home, Jackson on November 17, 2025, at 11:00 AM with Dr. Henry "Digger" Creel officiating, following a public visitation that will start at 10:00 AM. Friends and family are invited to come together to celebrate her incredible life and share their loving memories.
Virginia will be laid to rest following the services in Old Leroy Baptist Cemetery, as her family honors her legacy of love and joy.
Virginia Woodyard Gill Burge will be profoundly missed, but her spirit will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who knew her. May she rest in peace.
