William Bumpers

William Louis Bumpers, 74, of Oxford, passed away July 31, 2020 at his residence. He was born on December 6, 1945 to Clyde F. Bumpers and Sallie Motes Bumpers. A veteran of the U.S. Marines in the Echo Raider unit and 1st Battalion 26th Division and 5th Division, he received a Presidential Acknowledgement for an assignment that required him to guard President Lyndon Johnson during his visit to Vietnam. He was a proud lifetime (52 years) member of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and a member of Harvest Church of God in Oxford.

He was a graduate of Jackson High School and Patrick Henry Community College and enjoyed fishing, the beach, watching Auburn University football and spending time with his family. He also loved to share his passion for GM “Squarebody” trucks and raising fresh vegetables.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Derick Louis Bumpers; siblings, Marcy Gates, Carol Butts; nephew, Jimmy C. Gates and father-in-law, Williams C. Batley, Sr.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine Batley Bumpers; son, Steven (Wendy) Bumpers; granddaughter, Megan Bumpers, all of Oxford; siblings, Phillip (Linda) Bumpers of Conway, AR, Frances Bayles of Monroeville, Ellen Roe of Salitpa, Jane (Charlie) Roberts of Jackson; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 8, 2020 at Lathan Funeral Home in Jackson with the Rev. Jerry Irwin officiating. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow the service at Trinity Memorial Gardens in Jackson with Lathan Funeral Home directing.

Pallbearers will be Darrel Gates, Brent Gates, James Chivers, Bill Spence, Mathew Dolbear, Anthony Roberts and Bob York.

Honorary pallbearers will be William Spence, Bill Chivers, William C. Batley, Jr., David Dolbear, Mathew Dolbear, Mike Dixon, Tommy Butts, Jr., Jason Roberts, Wayne Travis and George Hutchinson.
