Clarence James Watters

May 5, 1931 ~ October 21, 2020 (age 89)


Honorable Clarence James Watters, 89 passed away on October 21, 2020. He was born May 5th 1931 in Suttle, Alabama to Joe C. Watters and Louise L. Watters.

He is survived by two brothers, Travis (Caroline) Watters and Alan (Sue) Watters, three children Vicki (Clarence) Watters Hawkins, Veda Watters and Jim (Shirley) Watters, three grandchildren, Joseph (Carmen) Hawkins, Hannah (Chris) Cotten and Sarah Watters, and four great-grandchildren, Maura Hawkins, Ruby Cotten, Lila Cotten and James Hawkins.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Hester Smith Watters, five brothers, Joe M. Watters, William J. Watters, Leo Watters, Lewis Watters, Randolph Watters and his sister, Univista Gray.

He attended high school in Perry County and married shortly after graduation. He was employed by the Bell Telephone company where he quickly moved up in the ranks and was transferred to Grove Hill where he made his life and raised his family.

After a successful career in the telephone business, Watters turned to public service, first serving Clarke County as a Commissioner then as the Probate Judge. In addition to these roles he also served his community as a volunteer fire fighter, little league coach, director of the First Bank of Grove Hill, deacon in the Grove Hill Baptist Church and member of the Grove Hill Jaycees, Lions Club and Chamber of Commerce. He was honored as the Grove Hill’s Citizen of the Year in 1985. Driving his successful career and his service to his community were his faith in the Lord and his love of his family.

The family will hold a private graveside service on October 23rd at 11:00 am. A memorial service will be planned for a later time.
